Let me introduce you to my sister Susie. She kindly offered to show us her homemade laundry soap recipe. She lives on the West  coast of Washington state and the sea is her life. A dirty life it is. This laundry soap works for her. Trust me it will work great for your family too.

Here’s Susie:

A Year’s Worth of Homemade Laundry Soap.

I love making my own powdered laundry soap. A few years ago, I switched from liquid to powdered soap as making the liquid became too messy and time-consuming. My powdered soap recipe works just as well and lasts a whole lot longer than the liquid recipe I used to make.

A great feature of making your own homemade laundry soap is you know what’s in it! This recipe can be easily adjusted to fit the demands of your family. I can add more crystals or oxygen depending on what type of work I’m doing. I don’t have anything in my clothes that will cause rashes or itching. For some of us commercial laundry soaps are full of irritants.

Keeping it simple and inexpensive is what I am all about.

I buy as many ingredients as I can from the Dollar Store. Unfortunately, our (Inky Dinky Teeny Tiny) local store isn’t carrying as many of these items as they used too.

Start at your local Dollar Store and pick up anything they don’t have at any other grocery store (or Walmart) I am sure if you live in a larger city, your Dollar store will have far more items than mine.

You can purchase some of the items for this Homemade Laundry Soap online and for a pretty good price.

Here’s my preferred recipe item list:

• Baking Soda (55oz.) This is available at your local stores.
• Super Washing Soda/Ash (55 oz)
• Fels Naptha (3 bars) –or-  Pink Zote Soap (1 double bar which I used today)
• Purex Crystals (18 oz)
• LA’s Totally Awesome Oxygen Orange Base Cleaner, 32 oz (2 32-oz jars) You will need TWO of these. These come with perfect size scoopers so look for them inside.

Optional
• Bleach Powder (42-oz use only ½ box) I don’t use this – I just add liquid when needed as it’s cheaper and easier

Ingredients For One Year Of Laundry Soap

Get a big, heavy-duty black garbage bag to mix everything together. It’s easier to mix the soap in this bag and you can store what you’re not using in the bag. Keep a small amount handy near your washer in a jar or airtight container.

Instructions:

  • Use a food processor to chop the Fels (or Zote) into a fine powder. Try adding some baking soda in with it to prevent the soap from clinging to the food processor blade.20150214_160723
  • Toss the fine Fels/Zote into the garbage bag.
  • Add the rest of the items on the supply list into the bag in the amounts noted in the parenthesis).
  • Just start swooshing the ingredients around to mix them up really good. (Kids love doing this)20150214_172641
  • I bought a pretty glass container for my soap. Put one of the scoops that come with the Oxygen on top.

Directions for using your Homemade Laundry Soap:

Add 2- to 3-scoops (remember the scoop included with the Purex Crystals is the perfect size) for a large load of laundry to get your clothes very, very clean.20150214_173100

This soap isn’t going to produce suds. Suds do not make your clothes clean!

So, if you open your machine to check out what’s going on, just trust it’s going to work. My clothes are covered with fish guts and blood, sea salt, grease and diesel and my clothes always come out smelling good and feeling clean.

My recipe lasts me a year.  I’m just a single girl but I live a busy, active life 🙂

GIFT IDEA: I use the empty Oxygen containers to make gifts of my soap, so keep them and pass them around. Let’s get everyone to use homemade soaps!

I am familiar with soda crystals but not the other ingredients for washing soap and dishwasher tablets. Can you recommend alternatives that may be available in the UK

Hi Maureen, I am sorry. I have no idea what to suggest for substitutes. If you follow the amazon links maybe they will lead you to whatever products are used locally to you (or can be shipped free). I hope you find some options that work for you. Best regards!
