Simple White Cake or Cupcakes

This Simple white cake (or cupcakes) is a great recipe for kids to learn on. My oldest daughter found it for her oldest daughter, Aliyah.  I am so excited about this easy scratch recipe for kids!

The simple white cake recipe uses minimal ingredients and is simple to whip together. Add a basic buttercream or cream cheese frosting on top for a truly easy recipe. This cake does not take as long as most cakes to make and it is so tasty.

We wanted a recipe on the blog that is easy for kids to make. This recipe has been made many times and is a tried and true beginner baking recipe.

Aliyah's Simple White Cake
Aliyah made her Simple White Cake recipe into cupcakes with her sisters. They are frosted with fresh raspberry frosting. Yum! Aliyah decorated this one all by herself. Good job!

Aliyah and her sisters made a birthday party with this recipe. We celebrated Milla’s fifth birthday by making our old favorite simple cake recipe into cupcakes. The girls did the work and I took some pics.

THE BACKSTORY:

When Aliyah was seven she made this cake for her sister Lainy’s birthday. Now it’s three years later and Aliyah, Lainy and Camilla all pitched in to make this recipe for a fun day at Grandma’s house. We created an impromptu birthday party! We had so much fun. Here is the story of this recipe.

Aliyah's Simple White Cake
Aliyah’s version of the simple white cake. I’m so proud of her!

This is the picture I’m proudest of on my whole blog. I didn’t take it and I didn’t bake this simple white cake. But I have eaten this cake and can tell you it’s a fine tasting white cake.

My seven-year old granddaughter, Aliyah, made this  simple white cake from scratch all by herself. She created and decorated this cute cake for her four year old sister’s birthday party. Everyone at that party had a piece and we all proclaimed it delicious!

Yes, this grandma is proud of her eldest granddaughter. Her generosity of spirit, can do attitude, excellent reading abilities and years in the kitchen learning at her mother’s knee all contributed to this excellent moment in time.

Our four year old birthday girl was delighted to have her cake made by her big sister. Aliyah’s gift of creativity and time was gratefully accepted with four year old shining, happy  eyes… good feelings around the whole party.

**********************************************************************************************************

Now Aliyah is 10, Lainy 6 and Camilla just turned 5 years old. They made a batch of cupcakes out of this recipe together. Aunty Kaytie came over to help with the frosting. As it turned out the girls got into decorating and they all made masterpiece cupcakes.

More Kids Baking Recipes:

Their mother, Andra-Lee was interested in baking very young too. When she was 9 years old Andra-Lee wanted to learn how to make beautiful cakes like her aunty Linda. So we sent her to the local cake decorating class. The women in the class were so helpful and supportive of her desire to learn. With their help she became accomplished in basic cake baking and decorating skills. We all loved it when Andra-lee started making noises in the kitchen!

Encourage your kids in the kitchen:

If you have children in your life, and they have an interest, cooking with kids is a really big deal. They learn about chemistry and math and safety in the kitchen when taught to cook responsibly. They learn the bonding of family and food, as Aliyah did. And It’s so creative!

Boring day at home with the kids? Kitchen time. The Whole family benefits from baking craft. The baker feels accomplished and the family gets treats! And when they are older…. you might get to put your feet up while a capable youngster handles desert. I really loved that part!

Aliyah is already moving ahead in her cooking and baking skills. Soon she will be ready to tackle her Aunt Kayti’s  Lovely Lemon Rose Cake.

Recipe Notes on Simple White Cake:

This is an easy durable recipe. It is not as light as the more advanced cupcake recipes on cupcake corner. This simple white cake uses baking powder to help the thick batter raise well. This is a tasty beginning baker recipe the whole family will enjoy.

Double this recipe for a two layer cake!

This introductory level simple white cake recipe makes one single layer cake or 12 cupcakes.

Frost as desired. If making a double batch for a two layer cake use your favorite jam for the filling.

Always supervise your junior chefs!

Cooking with kids, as I have for years, usually turns out great for everyone when they have a bit of experience, as Aliyah did . But handling even “safe” kitchen equipment can be troublesome for first time bakers. They will need a helper to keep things positive, and safe. Eventually you’ll have a great assistant or dessert cook like I did. So worth encouraging them young! And they learn fractions and science in a relevant, rewarding way.

Katyi and Diane, you really play down these cupcakes. This recipe is fabulous - I use for cupcakes and texture is perfect! I sometimes add blueberries. This morning we're going to sprinkle a little bit of sugar on top before they go in the oven. Thanks so much for the recipe

Aliyah will be so thrilled to see her cake on your blog this afternoon. :) It really is an easy and yummy homemade cake recipe. I have a hard time with them and they usually have a weird aftertaste or totally fall apart, but she nailed this recipe the first time she made it (with very little mama help other than getting it in the oven!) and every time since.
