What is the difference between Bruschetta and a Crostini?

Though they are very similar in technique and taste, there are some notable differences between the crostini and a bruschetta. Bruschetta is traditionally made from toasted rustic Italian, or sourdough bread slices, then topped with fresh chopped basil, tomato and mozzarella drizzled in balsamic vinegar.

Crostini is made from a more delicate, soft bread round such as a simple white bread baguette. Crostini can be topped with any variety of toppings you desire including various soft cheese spreads, fresh fruits such as fig or berries, and toasted nuts. They can be prepared as a savory bite by using toppings such as roasted mushrooms and caramelized onions, deli meats like prosciutto paired with marmalade and brie, or roasted butternut squash and bacon.

How do I prevent Crostini from getting soggy?

Crostini is an appetizer best prepared and served quickly as most of the toppings will add a liquid element to the toasted bread. Crostini needs a filling or base layer of soft cheese, marmalades, guacamole, or a spread to hold the fillings and create a barrier between the bread slices and the toppings.

To prevent sogginess, it is best to wait to add the toppings until you are ready to serve. If you are serving crostini at an event we suggest providing the toasted crostini slices, and laying out the spreads and toppings for your guests to build their own crostini when they are ready to enjoy them.
