Stinging Nettles Juice! A Healthy Spring Tonic

Stinging nettles are nutritional powerhouses. They make an excellent choice for green juicing! They have massive nutritional and medical value! Learn more about the green juicing process and recipes!

Stinging Nettles

Stinging Nettles are a bit of trouble to harvest. They are so healthy for you it’s worth the work and a few stings. Promise!

An ancient herbal remedy for many ailments, stinging nettles are really a gift of nature. I try to remember that when they sneak up on me in my flower beds and give me a hello sting! As prolific as the dandelion, nettles are just as good for us in different ways. Mother nature really does offer us all the nutrients we need if we will pay attention; and do a little work!

What the Stinging Nettle offers nutritionally:

  • Nettles are great for detoxification.
  • They help clear the liver and kidneys and build up the blood with iron.
  • Nettles are rife with vitamins, minerals and other nutrients.

I have some links to articles thoroughly describing their health benefits at this post’s end. I hope you will take the time to read about nettles and be encouraged to add them to your spring green juices!

Greens For Juicing. Including Stinging Nettles

Dave brought in this bowl of healthy greens for our juice tonight. Raspberry, blackberry, kale, Asian greens and Stinging Nettles. All of these greens are amazingly healthy for us. Spring is the best time to harvest them. All the wild greens are young, fresh and full of nutrients! Unfortunately he forgot to pick some Dandelion leaves. Find out here why Dandelions are healthy for you too!

I heard stinging nettles are full of nutrients, over the years, but could find no takers in my family to eat them. So we treated them as weeds and whacked them down wherever we found them on our property.( A testament to their endurance; they are still coming back after thirty years of whacking!)

Green Juice Put Some Stinging Nettles In The Juice!

We HATE being stung by Nettles! The thought of drinking that stinging weed didn’t sit well.  We finally decided to go for it. My husband bravely went forth and, with gloves, scissors and bowl. He attacked a likely group near our barn. I waited in the kitchen next to the sink with the tongs, and juicer.

My hero suffered a few nettle stings at first.  After several nettle juices, he actually became somewhat immune to the nettles sting.  We feel very good about challenging ourselves to try out this very healthy juice! Several years later we are still harvesting and juicing stinging nettles. We get an energy boost every time! Stinging nettles make a healthy spring tonic after a winter of laying about with the goodies!

TIP: If you do get stung by a Nettle IGNORE IT! DO NOT RUB the sting!! A nettle sting will quickly settle down if left alone. Rubbing it will make it lots worse! If you have a really bad sting that continues to bother you after 30 minutes or so; make a paste of baking soda and water and pat it onto the sting. That will help soothe it.

Stinging Nettles are worth the trouble!

Stinging Nettle juice is now a regular part of our spring diet. Nettles are FREE! We like that. Nettles love our property. We never have a problem finding good fresh organic stingers here!

Another boon of juicing nettles is they grow very early in the year. Nettles, along with budding blackberry shoots, kale and dandelions make a very high powered green juice. Throw in some wintered over parsnips for added nutrition and sweetness.

I have lots of goodies growing wild in my garden (2000 m2). I harvest nettles with a slightly heavier left glove and clippers in my right hand. I hold the top of the plant with left hand, clip down to the lowest green leaf, then clip the whole stalk into 4-6 inch pieces into a large bucket. I then toss with salad tongs for a week+ until dry, no more sting, peel off the leaves and grind up in a mixer. The powder is very fine and does well in omelettes, etc. Nice flavor, no sting. I mix the powder usually with lovage.

Hi Diane I am curious if you noticed any nutritional benefits since eating nettle. I would like to juice them for a nutritious drink every day and then dry and powder them for when winter arrives. Do you use a juicer, blender? How do you strain? Thoughts? Lynda

Hi Mary, How interesting! Thanks so much for sharing how you dry nettles and make them into a powder. I have never tried this. I will now. And I have lovage too. We have always used our nettles fresh in juice and we add our herbs to salads and soups or other recipes. It's wonderful of you to share a new way to use these extremely healthy wild foods. Thanks and have a great day!
