An ancient herbal remedy for many ailments, stinging nettles are really a gift of nature. As prolific as the dandelion, nettles are just as good for us in different ways. Mother nature really does offer us all the nutrients we need if we will pay attention; and do a little work!

One way that the plant itself is used, is for treatment of nerve damage and arthritis. The plant is brushed along the skin as a form of therapy in order to try and regain sensation and calm to the damaged nerve receptors of the body and to promote wellbeing.

That being said, most of us don’t enjoy the sensation of the nettles sting. Take precaution when picking wild nettles by using gloves, scissors, and storing the plants in bags that will protect your skin from the sting of the plant.

Do be mindful of where you source your nettles as well. Make sure they aren’t growing in an area where they are being sprayed with chemicals to try and rid the area of them.

What can I put in my fresh nettle juice?

That is always absolutely up to you and your preferences. If you have some green juices or smoothies that you already enjoy, just add a few sprigs of nettle to it! Our recipe should be used as a beginning point for you to experiment with and build on.

Fresh plant juices are ideal, so we recommend either juicing or blending whole fruits, veggies, and herbs rather than using pre-packaged juices. Fresh and whole ingredients will always deliver more nutrition and a far superior flavor.

How to make this delicious nettle juice

This juice can be made with a juicer or in a blender. The balance of ingredients may take you a few tries to get right for your preferences, but we recommend starting with small amounts of nettle and adding more if you desire.

Stinging nettles are nutritional powerhouses. They have massive nutritional and medical value, and can easily be added to your favorite green juice recipes for an extra dose of healthy vitamins.

Ingredients

  • 2 Cups nettle leaves
  • 4 cups other mixed greens, this can include any healthy leafy green
  • 1 apple chopped
  • 1 lemon
  • 6 carrots
  • 1 parsnip
  • 1 inch chunk of fresh ginger

Instructions

  1. Thoroughly wash all of the produce
  2. Use tongs when handling the nettles
  3. Put the ingredients into your juicer per your juicer directions
  4. Enjoy immediately

I have lots of goodies growing wild in my garden (2000 m2). I harvest nettles with a slightly heavier left glove and clippers in my right hand. I hold the top of the plant with left hand, clip down to the lowest green leaf, then clip the whole stalk into 4-6 inch pieces into a large bucket. I then toss with salad tongs for a week+ until dry, no more sting, peel off the leaves and grind up in a mixer. The powder is very fine and does well in omelettes, etc. Nice flavor, no sting. I mix the powder usually with lovage.

Hi Diane I am curious if you noticed any nutritional benefits since eating nettle. I would like to juice them for a nutritious drink every day and then dry and powder them for when winter arrives. Do you use a juicer, blender? How do you strain? Thoughts? Lynda

Hi Mary, How interesting! Thanks so much for sharing how you dry nettles and make them into a powder. I have never tried this. I will now. And I have lovage too. We have always used our nettles fresh in juice and we add our herbs to salads and soups or other recipes. It's wonderful of you to share a new way to use these extremely healthy wild foods.
