To begin, using a scalloped knife, cut 1 large watermelon in half horizontally Then, slice the top half in half again for easy removal

Using a melon baller, scoop out the flesh from both halves, setting it aside in a bowl Carefully scrape the inside of each watermelon half to remove any remaining fruit and create a clean bowl-like shape

Carefully scrape the inside of each watermelon half to remove any remaining fruit and create a clean bowl-like shape *Wash your choice and assortment of berries and fruits, enough to fill the watermelon*

We chose to use fresh blueberries and about 2 cups of apple We cut the apples with small star shaped cookie cutters for a patriotic take You can use any shape you desire

If you do use apples, place the apple stars in a bowl and drizzle them with fresh lemon juice to prevent browning  Gently toss to coat them evenly

Take the watermelon balls you set aside and place them back into one of the watermelon halves  Add the berries and apple stars to the watermelon bowl Gently mix all the fruits together, being careful not to break the apple stars

You can cut off a small piece from the bottom of the watermelon half you are using as a bowl  This will prevent it tipping over at serving

Optional Citrus Honey Dressing

2 tablespoons freshly squeezed orange juice 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice 1 tablespoon honey 1/2 teaspoon grated orange zest 1/2 teaspoon grated lemon zest

The dressing can be drizzled over at serving, or set aside in a bowl for guests to enjoy if the wish to add it
