Begin by preheating your oven to 350 degrees F
In a mixing bowl combine
2 1/4 Cups flour
3/4 teaspoon baking soda
3/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
Whisk together
1/2 Cup unsweetened cocoa powder
and
1/2 Cup hot water in a small bowl or pan
In a saucepan on the stove add
1 Cup (2 sticks) butter
and
1 2/3 Cup granulated sugar
On medium to low heat, whisk until they are just combined and melted together
Add in the cocoa powder mixture to the butter and sugar mixture
Remove from heat and blend with an electric beater for 4-5 minutes until it is cool
Add in 3 large eggs one at a time mixing thoroughly between additions
Mix in 1 Tbs vanilla
Then, alternate adding in
2 1/4 Cup all purpose flour
and
3/4 Cup sour cream
Mix until the batter is only just combined and smooth
Bake in the oven for 15-18 minutes or until a toothpick can be inserted and comes out cleanly
Remove from the oven and allow the cupcakes to cool
Once the cupcakes have cooled, core the center out to make a small hole
The cupcakes will be filled with Nutella
Fill a piping bag with Nutella and pipe it into the center hole, or use a small spoon to gently work it into the cupcake center
To make the Nutella Frosting combine in a stand mixer
1/2 cup unsalted butter
13 oz container of Nutella
4 cups powdered sugar
1 tsp vanilla
7 tbsp heavy cream
Gently cream the butter and slowly mix the rest of the ingredients until the frosting is fluffy
We decorated these cupcakes using a Wilton 2D piping tip to make the swirls
We finished them by adding chocolate sprinkles
