Can I use Homemade Spaghetti Sauce for this recipe?

Yes you can! substitute the store bought spaghetti sauce with 2 1/2 cups of homemade sauce. Here is an easy recipe you can follow to make your own homemade spaghetti sauce:

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 can (6 ounces) tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar (optional, to balance acidity)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

  1. Heat olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Add the chopped onion to the pan and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
  3. Add the minced garlic to the pan and cook for another 1-2 minutes until fragrant, being careful not to let it burn.
  4. Stir in the crushed tomatoes and tomato paste, mixing well to combine.
  5. Add the dried basil, dried oregano, and dried thyme to the sauce, stirring to incorporate the herbs evenly.
  6. If desired, add a pinch of sugar to balance the acidity of the tomatoes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  7. Bring the sauce to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low. Let the sauce simmer gently for about 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally, to allow the flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken.
  8. Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning as needed.
  9. Once the sauce has reached your desired consistency and flavor, it’s ready to serve over cooked spaghetti or your favorite pasta.
  10. Optionally, you can garnish with freshly grated Parmesan cheese and chopped fresh basil before serving.
