How to make homemade stuffing:

If you want to make your own stuffing for this recipe, here is a simple recipe to follow:

  • 1 loaf of day-old bread (white, whole wheat, or a mix), cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (1 stick)
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 2-3 stalks of celery, diced
  • 2-3 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 2-3 cups chicken or vegetable broth
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 2 teaspoons dried sage
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon dried rosemary
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley
  • Salt and pepper to taste

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Prepare the Bread: Spread the bread cubes in a single layer on a baking sheet. Toast them in the preheated oven for about 10-15 minutes, or until they are dry and lightly golden. Alternatively, you can leave the bread cubes out overnight to dry out.
  3. Sauté the Vegetables: In a large skillet or saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the diced onion and celery, and cook until they are softened, about 5-7 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes.
  4. Combine Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the toasted bread cubes, sautéed vegetables, and dried herbs. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Moisten the Stuffing: Gradually pour the chicken or vegetable broth over the bread mixture, stirring gently to combine. The amount of broth needed may vary depending on how moist you like your stuffing. Start with 2 cups and add more as needed. The bread should be moistened but not soggy.
  6. Add Eggs: Once the bread mixture is moistened to your liking, stir in the beaten eggs. The eggs will help bind the stuffing together during baking.
  7. Bake the Stuffing: Transfer the stuffing mixture to a greased baking dish. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes. Then, remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and crispy.
  8. Serve: Once the stuffing is done baking, remove it from the oven and let it cool slightly before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.
