What is Burrata Cheese?

Burrata is a luxurious and indulgent cheese that originated in Italy. It belongs to the family of fresh Italian cheeses, and its name, which translates to “buttered” in Italian, aptly reflects its rich and creamy nature. The cheese is what gives chicken burrata it’s notable flavor and luscious texture.

Here’s what makes burrata unique:

  1. Outer Shell: The outer shell of burrata is made from fresh mozzarella cheese. This shell is a thin, delicate layer that encapsulates the creamy interior.
  2. Creamy Filling: What sets burrata apart is its luscious, soft, and creamy center. This filling is a combination of stracciatella (shredded mozzarella mixed with cream) and fresh cream. When you cut into the burrata, the interior spills out, creating a mouthwatering contrast with the outer layer.
  3. Texture: The texture of burrata is incredibly soft, tender, and smooth. The combination of the slightly firmer outer layer with the creamy interior makes it a delightful experience for the palate.
  4. Flavor: Burrata has a mild and delicate flavor profile. The creaminess adds a luxurious touch, while the fresh milk flavor from the mozzarella contributes a clean and slightly sweet taste.
  5. Versatility: Burrata is a versatile cheese that pairs well with a variety of accompaniments. It can be enjoyed on its own, drizzled with olive oil, or served with fresh tomatoes, basil, and a balsamic glaze. It is also a popular addition to salads, pizzas, and pasta dishes.

I used the Mini Burrata cheese balls from Costco in this dish.

  3. Caesar Salad: A Caesar salad with crisp romaine lettuce, Parmesan cheese, and homemade croutons offers a fresh and crisp contrast to the chicken.
  4. Sauteed Spinach: Quick and easy to prepare, sautéed spinach with garlic and a dash of lemon juice provides a nutritious and flavorful side.

Substitutions for chicken burrata

Shallots Yellow or red onions are the most common substitute for shallots. They have a stronger flavor than shallots, so use them in a smaller quantity. For every one shallot, you can use about half a small onion

Thyme Italian seasoning is another herb blend that usually contains thyme, oregano, rosemary, and basil. It can be used as a substitute for thyme in Mediterranean or Italian-inspired dishes.

Fresh Basil Arugula has a peppery and slightly bitter taste but can provide a fresh and green component to your dish. It works well in salads or as a garnish.

Cherry Tomatoes Grape Tomatoes, similar in size and sweetness to cherry tomatoes, grape tomatoes are often interchangeable. They work well in salads, pasta dishes, or as a snack.

Remember that each substitute has its own unique flavor profile and will change the overall experience of your chicken burrata, so the choice depends on the specific dish you’re preparing and your personal taste preferences. Adjust the quantities and experiment to achieve the desired flavor in your recipe.
