Fresh BBQ Oysters in the shell from the Pacific waters off Westport Washington! Learn how to grill your own oysters for an amazing appetizer or entrée.
Susie is sending us a tutorial from the beach today. Her good friends Jan and CB came down for a visit to Susie’s beach house and agreed to help us learn how to grill and serve this seafood treat! Thank you Beachy people!
BBQ Oysters in the Shell
You will need:
- BBQ Grill – tabletop or full-size
- Leather Gloves (or equivalent)
- A good sharp knife or strong screwdriver
- 12 Oysters
- Butter
- Garlic
For a quick, easy and delicious appetizer (or main dish, if you prefer), CB and Jan cook a dozen oysters every dinner we share at their visit to the beach. CB handles the oysters while Jan prepares the butter/garlic. It’s November, so no matter the time of year, oysters can be served.
CB and Jan pick up 12 oysters from our local oyster shack, Brady’s Oysters, outside of Westport, Washington. Brady’s has an Oyster recipe page on their website.
BBQ Oysters in the Shell Recipe:
Preheat Grill on “Meduim” for 5 minutes (We’re using CB’s: Webber Tabletop Grill – so the gauge reads “Medium.” If your dial has numbers, find the mid-range and go for that.) Place oysters on grill – as many can fit.
Heat until they “pop:” We timed it at around 22 minutes.
When ready to schuck, it’s best to use leather gloves to protect your hands from heat and sharp shells. Place schucking knife (or flat-head screwdriver: anything that will fit into a small opening, yet be strong enough to pry shell open) and twist, turn until shell snaps open. Here’s a quick video to help you get the hang of shelling oysters.
Push the beautiful oysters out of the shell and into a clean bowl and take to the party
Butter/Garlic Dip
We are all great lovers of garlic. So, our oyster dip is butter and garlic melted on the stove.
Jan uses half a cube with 1 clove of garlic, diced
Pour the cooked oysters into your butter and pass around the fork
There ya go! The most delicious oysters to make you smile!

That's a great idea, Cheryl. Never even occurred to me to toss some on the 'barbie for turkey day. It'd be a great appetizer to keep the hungry at bay until dinner!
