How to Cook Pinto Beans in Instant Pot:

  • Wash the beans and sort out any bad beans (or small rocks)
  • Load the pot with beans and your favorite liquid and a bit of oil to cook them in.
  • Add whatever spices compliment your desired results. A Bay leaf can add great savory flavor for a stew or soup.
  • Lock the lid, set the settings and walk away
  • When the pot dings let is natural release for about 30 minutes.
  • Now quick release the pot. And unseal the lid.
  • Your beans are tender, juicy and ready to use in your favorite recipe.

Keep the Cooking liquid.

Use the cooking liquid. It is now a bean broth full of rich flavor and nutrients. You want this in your recipe if possible.

If you plan to drain the beans after cooking I suggest you cook them with plain water but save the healthy and flavorful bean broth for other recipes.

You can use the bean broth for soups, sauces and stews. It’s very good. Freeze it for later.

Customize Your Beans:

Here are a few ideas for how to change up your beans. It all depends on how you want to use them once they are cooked.

Pinto beans are versatile. They work well in many different types of recipes with different flavors and textures.

When you cook your own pinto beans you can add flavors into them while cooking. That will enhance your recipe.

  • Pinto beans cooked in chicken broth compliments chicken, pork and ham hock recipes or hambone soup.
  • For a more savory flavor in beef recipes you can cook the beans in beef broth and add a bay leaf or two into the cooking pot.
  • If you want a richer vegetable soup try using a vegetable broth to cook the beans. Add in cumin, garlic powder and some salt.
  • For a specific recipe you can add the spices into the cooking liquid to flavor the beans exactly as the recipe requires. But you will need more spices for the actual recipe as directed. Be careful not to overdo it.
  • For a tomato base replace the liquids by 1/3 with a tomato sauce. You can also spice up the beans with peppers.

One More Thing… Beans are famous for flatulence. This method of cooking dried pinto beans, in my experience, eliminates this problem. Tell me if you have the same result. 🙂

  • 8 Cups water (or broth)
  • 1 Tablespoon oil
  • Seasonings to compliment your recipe as desired

Instructions
