What alcohol is Moscow Mule made of?

The classic Moscow Mule recipe is traditionally made with vodka. Vodka’s clean and neutral flavor allows the other ingredients in the cocktail, such as lime juice and ginger beer, to shine. The combination of vodka’s smoothness and the spiciness of ginger beer creates a well-balanced and refreshing drink that has become synonymous with the Moscow Mule.

This strawberry basil version also uses vodka. The flavors of the muddled fruits and herbs are allowed to peek through since vodka doesn’t add much flavor.

At the bottom of this post we have a few suggestions for Moscow mule variations using different alcohols. There is more than one way to enjoy your Mule drinks.

The traditional mug for a Moscow Mule is copper

Why is a Moscow Mule always served in a copper cup?

The Moscow Mule is traditionally served in a copper cup for several reasons. Firstly, the copper material is an excellent conductor of cold temperature, keeping the drink chilled for longer periods. Additionally, the metal can enhance the flavor of the cocktail, providing a slight metallic tang that complements the ginger and lime. Lastly, the iconic copper mug adds a touch of visual appeal and sophistication, creating a memorable and aesthetically pleasing presentation.

But not all Moscow mule mugs are made of copper. As we go into more in this post, Some drinkers are Leary of the copper mugs since a tiny bit of copper does escape into the drink. But copper is only toxic in large amounts. You’re unlikely to be poisoned by your copper mug unless you drink a TON of mules out of them in quick succession (in which case the alcohol is probably doing your more harm that the copper. 🙂

Do you put ginger beer in Moscow Mule with or without alcohol?

Traditionally, a Moscow Mule is made with alcohol, specifically vodka. Ginger beer is a key ingredient in the cocktail, providing its signature spicy and effervescent quality. However, if you prefer a Virgin Moscow Mule, you can still enjoy the refreshing flavors of ginger beer and lime juice without the addition of vodka.

A non-alcoholic version of this strawberry basil Moscow mule is a great option where an alcohol-free drink is desired. Since vodka doesn’t add much flavor you won’t miss it in a virgin variation. We offer you the virgin ingredients list in our Notes section after the recipe below. Try it!
