Baked Tilapia in Orange Sauce

Baked Tilapia in Orange Sauce is a simple homemade seafood dinner that is ready in under an hour. Tender, flaky tilapia baked with a fresh orange sauce combining aromatics and flavorful ingredients that finish the mild white fish beautifully.

Our Asian Orange Sauce is simple to make and can be enjoyed over a variety of meals like our crockpot meatballs, our orange chicken dinner over rice, and of course this delicious Tilapia. We enjoyed this fish dinner with Trader Joe’s basmati rice blend, a green kale salad and some artisan rosemary bread from a local bakery.

How long does Tilapia take to bake?

Two 1 pound filets of Tilapia will take about 20 minutes to bake at 350 degrees F. The time and temperature can vary slightly, but this is a good guide to go with. Over baking fish will result in dry meat, so it’s best to bake at a lower temperature and check for doneness.

Fish is done when the internal temperature reaches 145 degrees F and the meat is flaky.

Do you flip Tilapia when baking?

No, you do not need to flip Tilapia when baking. This fish will cook evenly in a glass baking dish or on a baking sheet uncovered.

Is Orange Sauce good on Fish?

We enjoyed this baked Tilapia with our Homemade Asian Orange Sauce. This sauce has a delicious umami flavor and it’s full of ginger and garlic, made with fresh orange juice, and powerful Asian ingredients for a wonderfully satisfying sauce.

The best thing about making your own sauces and condiments is you can adjust the recipe to suit yourself. The heat level, balance of citrus, and stronger ingredients like ginger and garlic can all be customized to your preferences.

Asian Orange Sauce Ingredients
We used sesame oil, rice vinegar, fresh garlic and ginger, honey, salt, soy sauce and fresh squeezed orange for the sauce.

Is Homemade Orange Sauce sweet?

This sauce is not very sweet compared to many of the bottled orange sauces. For this dish to be at its best you really need to make your own orange sauce. It’s really easy and you can adjust the flavors to suit yourself!

A very sweet sauce will not compliment this fish dinner; as well as this rich umami Asian orange sauce full of garlic and ginger with a bit of zing!

You may want to double the sauce recipe if you like it a lot and want some on the side. One batch made just enough for the two large Tilapia fillets shown. We didn’t need any extra but if you want more the sauce is easily doubled.

For a wonderfully healthy, side dish add Brown Rice Quinoa Blend to your meal. It’s a great choice for this easy, healthy meal!
