Simple to Make Sweet Heart Pastry:

We created this recipe with older kids in mind. When a junior baker is looking for a way to use their skills and show some love, this recipe is a good choice. As long as they can use an oven and follow the assembly instructions they can make this recipe. Even the cream cheese filling can be mixed by hand if they are leery of electric mixers.

FYI: Crescent roll puff pastry is a misnomer.

Don’t get confused at the grocery store. There is puff pastry. And there is crescent roll dough. They are not they same. The puff pastry is very similar to crescent roll dough but you will get a puffier baked result from it.

For this recipe we are calling for and demonstrating the crescent roll dough. However, You can use either crescent roll dough or puff pastry and still get a satisfying, delicious, sweet heart pastry.

Puff pastry will lay out differently and make the heart a bit more puffy and crumbly, so you may want to serve it on a plate with a fork. Crescent roll dough is a bit more durable for finger food.

Substitutes:

  • Either a sheet of puff pastry or Crescent dough can be used. It will be a bit different to form a Heart with the puff pastry, but not difficult.
  • You can use any flavor of pie filling you prefer. Homemade pie fillings are also tasty in this recipe. Just be sure they are thickened to the correct consistency so they don’t ooze out of the crust too much while baking.
  • The powdered sugar can be omitted or replaced with a cream cheese icing like the one we use on our sourdough cinnamon rolls.

How to Make This Sweet Heart Pastry Completely Homemade:

If you want to go the distance and really impress your people, you can make the dough homemade.

  • Use our homemade puff pasty recipe Puff pastry desserts are puffier than the crescent roll dough you see here. But they are interchangeable in this recipe. If you’re looking for ideas on what to make with puff pastry, this sweet heart pastry is a good option.
  • Use our homemade raspberry sauce for the filling. This sauce is made with either fresh or frozen berries. And will work with any berry you choose.
  • You can also use Nutella instead of the cream cheese like we did with our Nutella Christmas tree pastry. Nutella and raspberry are amazing together.
